Living in a big city, you would think that unless you went to the zoo or drove out into the mountains, you would not easily find wildlife. But I have had the lucky fortune of playing host for the past few months to a furry rodent that had set up house somewhere on my apartment balcony. Today, I finally nabbed it!
This rat had been digging up the potted plants on my balcony for more than the past two months. Every other morning, I'd go out to find dirt scattered everywhere and small shoots of budding plants eaten away. Every so often, I'd spot the little guy scurrying back and forth on the balcony. I had set up a trap to catch the little rascal alive, but it refused to be lured inside. I even tried different bait, ranging from beef jerky to bread to apple slices, but the little bugger seemed to be just too clever. Trapped! This morning, though, I found a little rat inside the trap. The funny thing is, the bait of bread I had put in the trap got rinsed away with a heavy rain a few days ago. Looks like I should have left out an empty trap from the beginning! The rat started making a disturbing high-pitched sqeak and would charge at me from inside the cage when I got near to look at it. Pretty fiesty little fellow. I took it to the Fuyang Ecopark near my apartment and let it go in the woods. I wonder if it'll meet up with some of the poisonous green snakes that reside in the woods there. About to be freed! |
