First MMA Event
Sunday, 26 October 2008

In the cage I saw my first mixed martial arts event (MMA) last night (10/25) at the Youth Activity Center here in Taipei. Two guys from our BJJ club were on the fight card and they both ended up trouncing their opponents. It was a great night of watching fights!

The event was put on by Ming Wu , an organization promoting all types of martial arts here in Taiwan. Last night was the third MMA event that Ming Wu put on and the shows apparently get better every time.

James and Justin, victorious!

The two guys fighting from Taiwan BJJ , Justin and James, both put on an excellent show.

Both of the guys had tough opponents. Justin took his guy down a number of times and just ground and pounded from the mount. Justin eventually got his oponent's back and tapped the guy with a rear naked choke. Very good fight.

Justin afterwards said that he was so nervous going into the cage. I think he now knows he doesn't have to be so nervous again.

James fought a tough match against the San Da King champion of all of Taiwan.Things could have gone pretty badly when the San Da King landed a few hard punched against James' head. But our guy remained calm and collected his senses and managed to keep his opponent off of him. A few rounds later, James managed to get the upper hand by using his ground technique to get mount on the guy and just pound him. The fight was eventually stopped by the ref when James' opponent was no no longer properly defending himself from the baragge of punches that James let fly from the mount.

Myself, Makoto and Isaac can't resist
We couldn't resist this photo op. Makoto (center) is our current BJJ instructor and is funny as heck
When James and Justin won their matches, everyone sitting in the Taiwan BJJ section right along ringside went estactic and hollered and yelled at the top of their lungs. I know my voice is still hoarse from all the cheering I did last night. Even HS and my cousin, who's visiting from Haiwaii, were getting into the action after initially looking bored.

Our guys did well in good fights at a good venue. It was a fun night and I really enjoyed seeing my first live MMA event in person.
