Something Missing . . .
Tuesday, 23 December 2008

Something missing . . . There are so many interesting and amusing things around us in our daily lives. We'd probably notice more of these things if we just stopped a moment, took a deep breath and really took a good look around ourselves.

Take this scene, for example, on my way to work this morning. Obviously, something is missing, and once you see it, it's actually quite amusing. Well, it's probably not amusing to the bike owner.

It's great to see more bikes being used around Taipei, especially for commuting purposes. It is kind of sad to see people's bikes stolen, though, resulting in scenes like this of a lonely tire left locked to a bike rack with the rest of the bike gone. Taipei just announced plans to launch a public bike rental program in the financial sector of the city in March 2009. Hopefully, the bikes used in that program will not suffer a fate similar to this bike.

Another amusing scene I saw this morning was this one of some poor chaps trying to push a broken down bus across an intersection.

Push harder!
Push harder!

Taipei has a fairly extensive and efficient public transportation system, though some of the busses are getting a bit old in the teeth and that manifests itself in the occassional broken down bus. I guess it takes much more than two guys pushing to get one of these things rolling because that bus did not budge an inch despite their darndest efforts.
