Subic Bay, the place where I lived and worked for two and a half years!
Subic Bay Subic Bay? Where is that? Well, for starters it's in the Philippines . . . see the map on the right? It's that little red dot. As you can see, it is fairly close to Manila, about a 2.5 hour drive if traffic is good. (Four hours if you're unlucky). The weather here is fairly nice year round due to the proximity to the equator. Since this is the tropics, it's sunny and hot most of the time but it gets pretty wet during the monsoon season during July through August (so I'm told). People here keep telling me that it actually floods when the monsoons come (usually from June to October), but I haven't seen much of rain yet. Probably all due to this El Nino/La Nina effect. A Map! Here's a map of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. This area used to be the home of the U.S. 7th Fleet. The U.S. Navy pulled out in 1991 after the Philippine Senate refused to renew a Military Base Lease Agreement with the United States. Those three red blocked areas form the Subic Bay Industrial Park, the place where I used to work. The company I worked for provides housing in the area in the red oval in the middle right side of the diagram. Very nice area surrounded by rainforests. A Picture! Yep that's the "Bay" in Subic Bay. It's a fairly small piece of real-estate, but the natural environment is very nice. The area in the lower right hand corner of this picture shows part of the Subic Bay Industrial Park, Phase I. The office building where I work is just barely visible (see the middle of the bottom of the picture? Yeah, that little white corner of a building). Another Picture! Subic Bay is one of the last remaining triple canopy rainforests in the Philippines (at least that's what their brochure says). The natural environment is indeed very nice here. Every so often you'll see monkeys hanging out by the side of the road waiting for handouts from the tourist who seem unable to resist the urge to give these guys something to eat in order to snap a picture or two.
