It has been a long time since I updated my website. I figure it's because the content mangement system (CMS) I'm using (Joomla 1.0) is a bit clunky to use. I'm thinking of upgrading to Joomla 1.5 or move over to Dupal, which might make posting easier and thereby more frequent. In anycase, while poking around the list of half-completed articles in the article queue, I saw that I didn't finish my mention of the Google mashup that I had made earlier.
I made Google mashup about three years ago and I felt it was quite an achievement at the time. I took a list of some high tech companies that the company I worked for at the time reported on and wrote a simple VB.NET program that did a webscrape of the Taiwan Stock Exchange database for their addresses in Chinese. Next, the program gathered the latitude and longitude of the addresses through the geocoding API from Google Maps. After putting everything into a MySQL database it was pretty straight-forward to do a mashup.
Sounds pretty straightforward and actually, it is, but it took me quite a bit of time to learn VB from scratch and work out the intracies of doing a mashup. I've now forgotten all the details of the program but I hope I made good comments in the code if I want to revisit it. Check out the mashup here. |
