Some stairs Aside from all the noise, traffic and other big-city hassles that afflict Taipei, there are little nature sanctuaries where one can escape to with relative ease and speed. There is a huge nature area called the Fuyang Eco Park just a 15 minute walk from where I live, where you can go to escape the heat of the day and watch butterflies float about and get back in touch with Nature.

The Fuyang Eco Park consists of a set of large hills bordering along the southeast side of Taipei and is mostly wooded with trees, plants and fauna. It's a great place to go watch butterflies. I've never before seen so many different varieties and sizes (many are as large as your hand!) of butterflies, most of which are very colorful.

In the morning, a lot of people, mainly older folk, go hiking along the many trails of the nature reserve. It's usually much cooler in the forested area of the park than on a city sidewalk, so the area is a great place to go escape the heat of the day.

Workers are reworking the entrance to the park to include a information board and a man-made stream. I personally would have just left the area the way it was instead of installing so many guide rails and artifically constructed areas.

There are quite a variety of wildlife living in this area. Most common are butterflies, dragonflies, birds and little lizards. Every so often a rambunctious pack of dark-colored squirrels will noisely make their way through the trees, shaking every other branch along their way.
