I was waiting for a friend one evening in front of one of the bigger department stores in Taipei when I saw this very funny scene.
Sumo wrestlers on the mat A sumo wrestling association in Taiwan was holding a sumo wrestling demonstration in front of the Sogo department store in Taipei. Ropes cordoned off a small area of canvas matting on which was a ring demarked by a raised foam barrier. A woman dressed in a ukata, similar to a Japanese kimono, came out and introduced the event. Ready to fight Then, six big guys dressed in sumo garb came out and started to do warm up exercises. What surprised me the most was just how flexible these guys were. They were doing complete leg splits all the way to the ground. I had always thought sumo guys were inflexible. Fight! I recall on a trip to Japan, my host father said to me that sumo wrestlers have muscles like steel and are built like American football players underneath all that fat. That I believe. Add super flexibility to the mix and you have a tough opponent. |
