Safety 101

Escape slingI was eating at that great American export called McDonalds in Taipei once again when I saw this sign for an escape sling. This piece of equiment actually is commonly seen in Taiwan. Whether or not it's used effectively in an emergency situation is left up to the audience's imagination.

Here's how it's supposed to work. In case you ever need to evacuate a building in an emergency and you can't leave by the way you came in, you need to first find, grab and open the case that has the emergency sling equipment inside.

Next, head to the window with the inverted red triangle on it open it and unfold the sling arm so that it hangs over the edge of the balcony.

Next, secure the sling mechanism to the sling arm and place the open end of the sling around your torso under your arms. Tighten up the noose and then climb over the edge of the balcony and let the sling pulley slowly lower you to ground level. There is a braking mechanism inside the sling pulley, so you supposedly will be enjoying a delightful gentle decent to the saftey of the pavement outside of the building from which you just escaped a raging conflagration.

While you go to the ground, the other end of the rope gets pulled up for the next person to use. And you're supposed to do all of these steps in a calm and collective manner. Never mind the smoke billowing out behind you or the throng of panicky people pushing for their turn to escape the coming flames and smoke.
