Gold! Almost . . .
Wednesday, 15 November 2006
2nd and 3rd placeI got gold! Well, almost . . . I participated in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) competition in Hong Kong on November 11 and did OK. I placed second in my weight class. Heck, much better than being eliminated in the first round like in the previous two tournaments I competed in!

I went into this tournament not expecting much since I was a little sick two weeks prior to the tournament and wasn't able to train as much as I wanted to. I figured that this tournament in Hong Kong would at the least be a good learning experience and never would have guessed that I would place!

2nd place
2nd place medal
I had three matches for the 68-77kg, white belt division in which I won second place and I had three matches in the white belt absolute (where they thow all the white belts and see who comes out on top regardless of weight) in which I got third. There were about twelve people competing in the 68-77kg bracket and about 10 in the absolute division.

In my third and final match for the 68-77kg category, I was up on points until the last 30 seconds of the match. My teammates were telling me to hold tight and stall until the time ran out. I figured that I would instead try a move and ended up losing the position. Heck, I was there to test and improve my skills, not practice stalling. In retrospect, I maybe should have just stalled. Oh well.

You walk away from every competition learning something new. From this competition I realized that I have indeed improved and that calm and technique will prevail over just brute strength and flailing wildly.

The video below is of my matches for the 69-77kg category competition.
