Computex is over!!!!
Thursday, 14 June 2007

Computex girls Computex Taipei 2007 finally wrapped up this past Saturday (6/9), and thank goodness. Since our company reports IT news, we reported extensively on the IT trade show every day. Some co-workers and I weren't leaving the office until 2 a.m., somedays until  after 3 a.m.

For the most part, there weren't too many super exciting things revealed at one of the world's largest IT trade show. AMD was getting ribbed for not having much in terms of showing its latest product line-up, which was supposedly to be out by about now, but Intel was surely making the most and grabbed the spotlight with the official launch of its latest chipset platform.

Despite the lack of major announcements, there of course were still some super cool products and neat technology to check out.

The Eee PC
The Eee PC. I'll take one.
During the past year there has been a lot of press about ultra-low cost comptuers like the XO from the One Laptop per Child project. I actually got to see and play with one at Computex. It's made out of that very smooth shiny plastic that cheap toys are made out of and so felt kind of cheap and plasticy. But heck, the units are meant to be priced at US$100 and put into the hands of kids in developing areas, so a toy-like feel would make it more acceptable with children.

Another untra-low cost computing device announced at this year's Computex was the Eee PC, of which the base version is to go for US$199. This little guy can run Windows or Linux. I saw a version that had Linux installed on it and the device sure is tiny. With wireless connectivity, you can take this little guy practically anywhere and hook up to the Internet. Heck, I might get one when it comes out.

There were plenty of computer system components on display. Boy, what people are putting into computers these days really blows the mind. What used to be a relatively planar platform has evolved into 3D monstrosities as CPU coolers, humongous graphics cards and other accessories now are added without abandon to motherboards.

Then of course, there were the showgirls of Computex. Sexily dressed women advertising the goods of various vendors definitely were not lacking at this year's Computex. Many vendors hired women to perform dance routines on little stages set up near their display booths. Needless to say, the gimmik works and always attracts a crowd.  In the US, there were some complaints that the showgirls at the E3 game expo were revealing too much and so imposed rules as to how much exposed skin was appropriate. Fortunately, the showgirls at Computex still have a sense of what is tasteful and haven't gone too far as to revealing too much.

Oh, besides the late night hours, it rained most of the time during Computex, a heavy, drenching rain. A kind of depressing rain. Wouldn't you know that as soon as the show is over, the rain stopped and the sun came out? At least now I can now go to sleep at a reasonable hour.
