Watch what you eat
Monday, 25 June 2007

Turning color!I discovered some small baby fish living in the water garden on my apartment balcony and found out that you are really what you eat!

My water garden has a couple of big fish and they must have laid eggs to give birth to some little baby fish that I found swimming about. The baby fish got sucked up by the water pump landed in the water basin that sits above the main container of the water garden. They must have been there for a week or two before I discovered them.

I used to be black!
I used to be black! You can still my original color!
The baby fish, three in total, were all black in color. They must have been living off the alge and water plants in the water basin since I never dump any fish food into that particular basin. Figuring that they wouldn't get much bigger living off bits of plant, I moved them all into the bigger water container with the rest of my fish.

A few days after moving them to the bigger container, I noticed something very interesting. The little baby fish, which were orignally dark in color, started turing pink/orange, roughly the same color as the fish food I'm feeding them and the color as the rest of my fish. After a few days of feeding them the red-colored fish food, the baby fish started breaking out in patches of pink and orange throughout their bodies. The fish food is advertised to help make the color of your fish more vibrant. I don't know if its actually supposed to color them!

The red fish food
This red fish food will change your color!
Seeing these fish turn color before my very eyes due to what they are eating was a bit shocking to me. You are what you eat, but I didn't realize just how fast you can become what you eat, at least in the case of fish.

This little experience makes me wonder about the effect of the environment on people. People may not necessarily turn color from eating a certain colored food, but it leaves you wondering about how what you eat affects your body. Aside from just food, how does what you read, hear and watch affect your state of mind and mental well-being? I think we sometimes forget just how great an extent our environment affects us. You are what you eat. Better think twice about getting a geasy hamburger to go!
